Earlier this year, Chinese commercial vehicle manufacturer Dongfeng formally introduced its first-ever fuel cell truck designed for long-haul transport as part of the company’s long-term hydrogen strategy.
The Truck Delivers 400 kW of Power and An Operating Range of 1,700 KM
According to Dongfeng, the truck delivers 400 kW of power, has a lifespan of more than 30,000 hours, and is engineered to allow cold starts at temperatures as low as -40°C. With the introduction of this truck, the manufacturer’s lineup now comprises three hydrogen fuel cell platforms offering 70 kW, 150 kW, and 400 kW.
Following real-world testing in both mountainous and flat terrains, Dongfeng‘s hydrogen vehicle reportedly achieved a hydrogen consumption rate of just 7 kg per 100 kilometres. With a refuelling time of just 15 minutes, the vehicle is expected to achieve a range of up to 1,700 kilometres.
Dongfeng claimed its new fuel cell truck as China’s first domestically developed hydrogen fuel cell platform with metal bipolar plates to pass the 10,000-hour endurance test under the new national standards. To support the 400 kW fuel cell system, the company also introduced the T1 platform, which focuses on low energy consumption, lightweight design, fast refuelling, and high safety standards.
