Volvo Ocean Race

Dongfeng Motor Corporation has confirmed its entry in the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race and Vice-President Yang Qing said the company was proud to be back in this event.

Dongfeng’s Comeback: Joining the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race

“The Volvo Ocean Race is the premier offshore sailing race in the world and has attracted China’s attention. More and more media and public now know of the race through the challenge by the Dongfeng Race Team, with the support of Dongfeng in the 2014-15 edition. There is no doubt that the Dongfeng Race Team made history and multiple Chinese sailors are part of that story.

“Not only did the Dongfeng Race Team succeed in marketing the Chinese motor brand to a growing global customer base, but the team also promoted Chinese culture through the Volvo Ocean Race. Dongfeng Motor Corporation is dedicated to support the Chinese team again with the leadership of skipper Charles Caudrelier and to once more challenge the offshore sailing fraternity and establish an effective communication channel about the sport of sailing between China and the world,” he concluded.

The Volvo Ocean Race is an eight-month round-the-world sailing race that is considered one of the toughest sport competitions in the world. The race would take the participating teams 45,000 nautical miles around the world in one of the toughest routes in its 43-year history. Starting from the Spanish harbour of Alicante on October 22, the 2017-2018 Volvo Ocean Race would visit 12 cities, including Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China.

The Dongfeng Race Team is seen as a unique cross-cultural group and the first Volvo Ocean Race team to include several Chinese sailors. Diversity is their challenge and strength. But above all, the Chinese, French and Swedish sailors on board are all focused on the same goal. And with trust, professionalism and technique they had raced around the world together and challenged the environments.

The team would be 100 per cent backed by Dongfeng Motor Corporation, the Chinese motor manufacturer headquartered in the Hubei province city of Wuhan, and the target would be to improve on an already strong performance in 2014-15 when they exceeded expectations by finishing third overall.
