The Malaysian Automotive Association’s (MAA) latest figures for January has shown a strong 74% increase in sales for commercial vehicles, while production narrowly beat levels from January 2021.
Great Start for Sales of Commercial Vehicles
With 6,913 commercial vehicle units sold in January 2022, this represents a healthy 74% on the 3,975 vehicles sold in January 2021. This was in part due to promotional campaigns led by manufacturers for the end of the year to accelerate sales.
Industry production slightly bested January 2021, with 3,506 units this January as opposed to 3,480 in January 2021.
Although both figures demonstrate a good start to the end, total industry volume was 38% lower than in December 2021. The floods that dominated parts of the Klang Valley and East Coast had a knock-on effect, especially for production, where supply chain disruptions were a factor.
In December, the MAA forecast similar levels to January 2022, although it is a shorter month. The Association also note that supply chain disruptions due to the flood and the ongoing chip shortages will continue into the following month.
