Renault Group, Castrol Introduce Circular Engine Oil Range

Castrol and Renault circular economy engine oil collaboration

The new Renault Castrol GTX range uses re-refined base oils to reduce carbon footprint while meeting OEM performance standards.

New Lubricant Range to Reduce Carbon Footprint by 13 to 24 Per Cent

Renault Group After-Sales (Renault Group) and Castrol have launched a new range of premium engine oils formulated with re-refined base oils (RBBO) called Renault Castrol GTX. With this launch, Renault Group has become the first automotive manufacturer to adopt the technology in its engine oil specifications.

The Renault Castrol GTX is now available across Renault Group‘s European dealer network, covering more than half of the manufacturer’s vehicles currently in use on the continent. The product rollout began with the RN17 5W-30 specification, followed by the RN700 and RN710. The RN720 and AN2022 are set to be launched next year.

Renault Group said the oils were co-developed with Castrol to meet the same technical and performance standards as conventional products, including engine protection and warranty requirements. The formulations use RBBO produced from used lubricants that are processed to a quality equivalent to virgin base oils.

The use of RBBO, according to the carmaker, reduces the carbon footprint by 15 per cent for the RN17 oil specification, with overall reductions across the range estimated at between 13 and 24 per cent.

“This launch makes Renault Group the first OEM to provide its entire recent vehicle range with next-generation lubricants formulated with re-refined base oil,” said François Delion, Vice President Global After-Sales at Renault Group. “It’s a true demonstration that sustainability can go hand-in-hand with uncompromising performance and quality, over the complete lifecycle of the vehicle.”

Castrol said the collaboration reflects growing demand for lower-carbon lubricants without compromising technical performance. “By co-engineering these products, we’re helping Renault Group meet customer needs today and tomorrow with high-performance, lower carbon, more circular lubricants for the automotive sector,” said Slawek Radon, Vice President of Business Development and Partnerships at Castrol.

Renault Group and Castrol said the initiative forms part of its broader efforts to support a more circular automotive industry and reduce Scope 3 emissions linked to after-sales operations.
