MAN adds the D15 EfficientHybrid option to Lion’s Intercity, offering up to 360 hp, improved efficiency, and compatibility with alternative fuels.
The D15 EfficientHybrid Lowers Fuel Consumption and Engine Load
MAN Truck & Bus has made its six-cylinder D15 engine available for the Lion’s Intercity as an EfficientHybrid option, positioning it as the centre of the coach’s latest update.
The D1556 LOH is a nine-litre inline-six offered in 280, 330, and 360 hp ratings, with peak torque from 1,200 to 1,600 Nm. It is compatible with alternative fuels, such as biodiesels, HVO, and synthetic XtL fuels, without any modification needed. For the non-hybrid intercity and school-bus variants, MAN continues to offer the proven D08 6.9-litre engine in Euro 6e tune (290 hp, 1,100 Nm), paired with the 6-speed EcoLife 2 automatic transmission.
The EfficientHybrid package pairs the D15 (available with EcoLife 2) with a 48-volt crankshaft starter-generator capable of 12 kW peak output. During braking, the unit recuperates energy stored inside a 48-volt UltraCap module (40 Wh) mounted on the roof. On acceleration, the crankshaft starter-generator can supply a maximum of 220 Nm additional torque to assist the diesel engine.
MAN says the system’s “self-learning” energy management uses energy where it is most urgently needed. When the vehicle is stationary, it supplies the on-board power supply, and when the vehicle is moving, it supports the diesel engine with electrical drive power, depending on the amount of stored electricity. It also includes a standard start-stop function that enables silent, locally emission-free stop phases at stops or traffic lights.
The D15 EfficientHybrid is compatible with both the EcoLife 2 automatic transmission and the MAN TipMatic option for the coach kit. MAN positions the hybrid as a fuel-saving measure for intercity and occasional transport. In addition to reduced consumption, the system is also intended to lower engine load during frequent starts in urban traffic.
Rather than conventional traction batteries, the hybrid energy storage uses ultracapacitor technology that is more durable under high-frequency charge/discharge cycles typically seen in intercity buses. No changes to the passenger layout or the bus’s safety equipment are presented as part of the engine option.
Bus Available in Three Lengths
The Lion’s Intercity itself is a high-floor, two-axle bus designed for intercity and school service, as well as light touring use. It is available in three lengths: 12.28 metres (R60), 13.05 metres (R61), and 13.14 metres (R62), with seating for up to 63 passengers or 59 plus one wheelchair space. The interior can be customised for basic school service or upgraded with closed luggage racks, service sets, and a toilet module for longer routes.
The bus’s cockpit is equipped with an electronic platform introduced in 2024, with a 12-inch driver display, an optional 7-inch infotainment monitor, and an electronic parking brake. Safety systems include Lane Return Assist, SafeStop Assist, Adaptive cruise Control with Stop & Go, and radar-based turning assistance, in line with the European General Safety Regulation (GSR Level 2).
For the exterior, the Lion’s Intercity adopts MAN‘s aerodynamic design with optimised luggage storage capacity of 5.4 to 6.7 cubic metres. Along with the D15 EfficientHybrid drivetrain, the model delivers improved efficiency, reduced noise, and a higher standard of comfort and safety for drivers and passengers.
