Malaysia’s Transport and Works ministries will coordinate BDM regulations through a new committee, aiming for clearer and safer heavy vehicle limits.

Technical Coordination Committee to Involve JPJ, JKR, APAD

Malaysia has formed a technical committee to harmonise weight limits for heavy vehicles on federal roads, following a joint meeting on December 8, 2025, chaired by Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.

The discussion between the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Ministry of Public Works (KKR) focused on the issue of gross vehicle weight (Berat dengan Muatan or BDM) and the need for clearer, safer limits across the country.

According to the official announcement published by the MOT, both ministers noted that restrictions on heavy vehicle road use fall under the KKR’s authority; therefore, closer coordination was needed to address overlapping regulatory responsibilities.

Agencies, including the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Public Works Department (JKR), and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), were also present at the meeting. They agreed to establish a Technical Coordination Committee on BDM to review the load-bearing capacity of federal roads and bridge structures in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. The review is intended to guide more precise and consistent weight-limit policies.

“The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to a comprehensive and sustainable approach to heavy-vehicle regulation, with public safety as the principal consideration,” the MOT stated.
