2026 CNY Road Ban: Key Dates and Vehicle Categories for Malaysia

Haulage companies and heavy vehicle operators in Malaysia will face extensive road restrictions this month as part of a national safety initiative for the 2026 Chinese New Year period.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) have introduced the “Pandu Cermat, Sampai Selamat” campaign to mitigate accident risks and improve traffic flow during the festive season.

The directive implements a road ban on specific goods vehicles during two peak travel windows: from February 14 to 15 and from February 21 to 22, 2026. All vehicle owners and drivers have been advised by the authorities to plan their journey early and adhere to the designated timings.

Under Category 1, heavy lorries with a gross weight exceeding 7,500 kg, timber lorries, and heavy machinery are prohibited from using the roads at all times during the ban dates. This classification also includes low loaders, pole trailers, and tractors that are not engaged in emergency or rescue operations.

Category 2 vehicles, which include container lorries and those transporting electronics, chemicals, or agricultural products such as palm oil and rubber, are subject to a ban between 8:00 pm and 8:00 am. An exception is granted for container lorries moving to or from ports and airports to industrial zones within the same state.

Meanwhile, mobile cranes and cement mixers, grouped under Category 3, are restricted from 6:00 until 6:00 am. These vehicles are permitted to operate within a 25 km radius of their construction sites during allowed hours, subject to time limits on specific roads.

The MOT said that specific exemptions apply to heavy wheeled machinery and mobile cranes performing emergency or rescue work. Furthermore, any goods vehicle or type of cargo not explicitly mentioned in the official schedule is permitted to operate throughout the restricted periods.

Road users are urged to maintain their vehicles in a safe condition and follow all traffic regulations. Reports regarding traffic violations during the campaign can be submitted through the MyJPJ app or via email to the authorities.
