Malaysia Automotive Recyclers Association Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Malaysia Automotive Recyclers Association (MAARA) celebrated its 10th anniversary with a grand dinner at Wisma Hua Zhong, Seri Kemabangan on 15th April. The event, themed ‘Work and Move Forward Together to Build up the Future’, was officiated by former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and MCA Deputy President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

“Recycling auto parts is beneficial for the environment because it reduces the need to manufacture new parts. A lot of resources, time and effort go into the manufacture of auto parts. Moreover, the manufacturing process produces a lot of waste, smoke and pollutants. By recycling auto parts, we could contribute significantly towards reducing the pollution caused during the manufacture of new automobile parts. Economically, the Malaysian automotive recycling industry is a crucial, market-driven industry with above RM2 billion in annual sales. The industry employs more than 50,000 people at above 3,000 locations across the country. Automotive recyclers also play an important role in the economic marketplace, providing an option to expensive new replacement parts and ensuring competition in the replacement parts market, which benefits the motoring consumers,” said MAARA President Gwee Bok Wee.

In 2017, he continued, the Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) developed and promoted the 4R2S, which was the industry standard for the qualification and standardisation of automotive parts and components for the Reuse, Recycle, Remanufacturing, Repair, and Services programmes. These standards served as a guideline for industry players, for example second-hand part dealers, recyclers, workshops, remanufacturers, used car dealers and salvage yard operators or businesses that provide the 4R and workshop services.

Adopting and complying with 4R2S, he pointed out, would require a lot of effort and commitment from the members to meet the 4M requirements in Man, Methods, Machines and Materials. To achieve this, they looked forward to the Government’s assistance on policy matters relating to the recyclers’ business licensing, product standards and training and technology sharing with OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers).

“Established in 2008, MAARA membership grew from 20 members to more than 200 after 10 years. But there are more than 2,000 automotive recycling companies in Malaysia, so we really hope that MAARA could work with more automotive recycling industry players and move forward to make our industry better and sustainable.”

The 800 anniversary attendees included 30 VIPs, members, guests and the media. Also present were MAARA Vice President Dato Sri Lau Koo San, the gala dinner Organising Chairman Tan Foo Lian, Treasurer Gwee Bok Chuan, The Federation of Malaysia Chinese Guilds Association (FEMACGA) President Lum Kim Soong, MAI Chairman Datuk Phang Ah Thong, The Federation of Automobile Workshop Owners’ Association of Malaysia (FAWOAM) Chairman Dato’ Too Peng Huat and Auto Audio, Accessories and Air-Condition Traders Association (AAA) President Lim Bee Choo.
