    MAN Truck & Bus Malaysia gave Truck & Bus News a complete and thorough tour of its factory in Munich, Germany last year.
The Munich facility is the parent plant and the location of MAN’s head office, with a total of 9,000 employees. In addition to mak- ing complete heavy series trucks (gross vehicle weight from 18 to 41 tonnes), it also produces cabs and drive axles for other MAN plants, and transfer cases and drive shafts for the entire plant network.
Let’s start with a bit of background information. Production of MAN trucks and buses dates back 100 years but for a few

decades, the vehicles were only produced in Nuremberg. It was not until the post-war period that Munich became a key site for MAN. The production and sale of the Nuremberg trucks increased continuously until it reached capac- ity limits with no further expansion possibilities in 1954. This led to the construction of the Mu- nich plant in 1955 and the first truck rolled off the assembly line on November 15, 1955. One year later, more than 3,000 vehicles were produced.
MAN celebrated 2015 as the 60th anniversary of this plant’s opening. Today, the Munich facil- ity has produced more than a million trucks, 2.3 million axles and 1.5 million cabs.
