duction process. At MAN, we encour- age creative thinking and innovation. This allows our employees to share their ideas comfortably.”
The cab division works in two shifts with more than 900 employees. It makes about 260 equipped cabs for TGX and TGS vehicle series per day and supplies body shell components to the production network. Around 44,000 cabs were produced in 2014.
Meanwhile, there are about 800 em- ployees involved in the two-shift pro- duction of axles, which include 25 types of axles (rear and front), drive shafts and transfer cases. The division has an average daily production of 900 axles and produced more than 93,000 axles in 2014.
MAN Delivers Quality
To assure the quality, he stressed that every single truck had to go through the test bench for a series of quality tests before leaving the factory. “We have to make sure that we deliver the quality that is able to withstand the toughest conditions.”
This commitment was reflected in the 2015 commercial vehicle report com- piled by Germany’s technical inspec- tion association (TÜV), with which MAN once again received a very fa- vourable rating. MAN was the truck manufacturer with the highest number of vehicles passing TÜV inspection, with no defects for the fourth consecu- tive year. Its TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX series achieved the lowest defect rate across all age categories(1 to 5 years), out- performing other brands. With re- gard to the percentage of 1-year-old trucks with no defects at all, MAN was
once again able to surpass the previ- ous year's record with 85.9 per cent compared to 83.2 per cent.
He also revealed that the plant was set to produce 46,700 vehicles, 111,500 axles, 58,300 drive shafts, 9,700 transfer cases and 63,200 cabs for the TGX and TGS series in 2016.
The Munich plant is indeed a lively and busy factory with continuous de- velopments. When we were there, the second parking area for trailers was under construction. Its logistics cov- ers the entire processes, from the re- ceipt of goods, provision of materials on the assembly line to the dispatch of vehicles and components. Every day, with the help of more than 600 employ- ees, the plant manages 20,000 stock movements.
Equally impressive were the MAN Truck Forum and Bus Forum; both were modern, stylish and unique. The former allows visitors to immerse in the world of MAN Truck & Bus AG through the prototype of the world’s first diesel engine built by Rudolf Die- sel and some old trucks on display, the company’s tradition, innovation and vision. The latter presents MAN and Neoplan brands under one roof though a comprehensive brand dis- play that covers all aspects of the history, present time and future bus mobility.
It was a fruitful trip that went beyond the excitement of going behind the scene as it provided us a more in- depth understanding of not only the technology and production process, but also the passion, quality and care that the company puts into the assem- bly of every MAN truck.
