The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) reported a mixed fortune for commercial vehicles production and sales in the month of August 2025. Even though production experienced a slowdown, sales numbers were up.

Compared to August 2024, production numbers of commercial vehicles in Malaysia were down 9 per cent, from 4,342 units to 3,958. A similar downturn can also be seen in the year-to-date numbers. From January to August 2024, commercial vehicle production reached 29,939 units, while this year the amount only reached 27,211.MAA reports a 9% drop in commercial vehicle production but a 3% rise in sales for August 2025, with overall auto volume up 4.2%.

Sales, however, told a different story. Thanks to aggressive promotion in conjunction with Merdeka celebration month and new model launches, sales numbers saw a 3 per cent increase from 5,564 in August 2024 to 5,739 in August this year.

Unfortunately, the 3 per cent increase still could not do much to lift the year-to-date numbers. From January to August 2025, only 38,038 units were sold, compared to 45,187 from the same period last year, meaning there was a 16 per cent decrease.

In general, August 2025 was better than July 2025 for the Malaysian auto industry. The month saw a 4.2 per cent increase (71,439 units) in Total Industry Volume (TIV) from July 2025 (70,101 units). Higher stock availability, supported by July’s high production volume, played a part in this.

For September 2025, the MAA predicted sales momentum to consolidate due to two reasons/ First, the number of public holidays in September means fewer working days. And lastly, there is a “wait-and-see” attitude towards the 2026 National Budget, including the continuity of the petrol subsidy rationalisation.
