The IVECO S-Way NP 460 Scores the Susatainable Truck of the Year Award for 2021
The IVECO S-Way NP 460 in LNG version was crowned Sustainable Truck of the Year 2021 in the Tractor category for the fifth award ceremony. The award is decided by a jury panel of professional journalists based on the Sustainability Index that was introduced by Italian specialist magazine, Vado e Torno who also created the award.
A Truck that Offers Alternative Traction
The IVECO S-Way NP integrates the best of IVECO’s industry-leading experience in natural gas traction with the high innovation content of the IVECO S-Way Range, developed to deliver a complete package of features and connectivity-enabled customised services focused on the driver, the fleet owner and on sustainability. Maurizio Cervetto, Vado e Torno Deputy Editor, stated: “With the IVECO S-Way NP, IVECO is setting a new reference in productivity and efficiency for long-haul alternative traction vehicles. The IVECO S-Way is not only the only natural gas vehicle with 1600-km autonomy; it is also the new reference in consumption with 4.12 km per kg of gas. The IVECO S-Way NP combines the technical performance, achieved with a well-proven powertrain, as well as an entirely new cab with a Cx improved by 12% that enables a significant fuel consumption reduction (up to 4%), with features and quality standards of a flagship vehicle that significantly raise the level of comfort for the driver and safety for the other road users."
Cervetto also refererred to the features of the S-WAY noting that: “The new cab creates an environment that enables the full use of the space (2,1500 mm free height and a tunnel height reduced to just 95mm). It is even quieter than before, inside and out (according to Piek standards). In addition to the many driving assistance systems, it offers new connectivity services that increase further the sustainability of all types of transport.”

Hilse also explained that the prize is related to their work listening to driver feedback, adding: “We listened to the driver and we designed the cab so that it feels like their home away from home. The LNG distribution infrastructure is developing fast and already covers the main European transport corridors. Subsidies and incentives introduced in different countries make these vehicles an increasingly interesting proposition. We are already seeing a shift in the mindset of transporters, who are increasingly coming to us for natural gas solutions. Most importantly, bio-LNG already provides a near-zero solution today, paving the way for zero-carbon transport with blue hydrogen produced from methane.”
How the Vehicle Made an Impact
The vehicle combines technology with comfort, safety, connectivity and sustainability. The driver-centric design of the cab provides a spacious, well-organized environment, where all functions can be remotely controlled through the MY IVECO EASY WAY app – from lighting to air conditioning, from infotainment to windows and doors. The cab has been reinforced to ensure mechanical resistance compliant with ECE R29.03 cab crash standards. The front axle has been fine-tuned to reduce braking distances by 15%, further improving safety measures, while the powerful Connectivity Box is the enabler of a host of features and brand-new services designed to enhance the driver’s life on board and maximize the owner’s profitability. It keeps the vehicle constantly connected with IVECO’s specialists in the Control Room, who monitor the vehicle at all times.
This enables the efficient planning of maintenance and repair stops, providing a predictive service to maximize the truck’s uptime. The Driving Style Evaluation system provides real-time advice to help drive efficiently and safely. The vehicle’s sustainable performance includes its quiet operation and low emissions. It achieves a 95% reduction in Particulate Matter and 90% in NO2 compared to Diesel –and, when running on bio-methane, it generates 95% less CO2 creating a circular economy.
IVECO has been investing in alternative tractions for more than 20 years, helping develop the increasing-growth of natural gas used within the European market, with more than 35,000 natural gas vehicles sold. It is also recognised as a facilitator in spreading the technology and as a bridge between the different stakeholders as they have approached this sector. This has led to the development, in just a few years, of a widespread network of some 80 LNG fuelling stations in their Italian territory alone.
