A new MoU between Johor’s lorry operators and SUC focuses on internships, applied research, and workforce development in the logistics sector.
MoU Aims to Bridge Skills Gap in Logistics Sector
The Johor Sand and Granite Lorry Operators’ Association has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Southern University College (SUC) to address the existing gap between the readiness of graduates and industry needs.
According to the association, graduates often enter the industry with strong theoretical knowledge but limited experience in real-world applications. The MoU aims to formulate a solution between both parties to narrow the aforementioned gap.
With a focus on the workforce department, operational readiness, and applied research, the MoU provides for joint research projects, internships, and industrial training programmes, workshops, and structured knowledge-sharing platforms. It also covers technology transfer and sustainability initiatives linked to day-to-day logistics operations.
“Johor’s logistics landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by infrastructure expansion, cross-border trade, digitalisation, and heightened regulatory scrutiny. Lorry operations today must balance productivity with safety, cost efficiency with environmental responsibility, and speed with compliance,” the association said in its official statement.
In a real-life scenario, under the agreement, students will be placed in live operational settings involving fleet management, depot operations, and safety systems, with exposure to compliance-driven decision-making. This aims to create a long-term talent pipeline with better adaptability and resiliency.
“Logistics companies often invest heavily in assets—vehicles, systems, infrastructure—yet underinvest in structured talent development. This partnership recognises that people remain the most critical asset in a sector facing increasing complexity,” the association noted.
