CAPAS 2019 Sees High Attendance

This year, CAPAS hosted 612 domestic and overseas exhibitors, which was a 5-per cent growth compared to the previous event.

CAPAS 2019 Concludes Successfully

The 6th edition of the Chengdu International Trade Fair for Automotive Parts and Automotive Services (CAPAS), which opened from 23rd to 25th May at the Chengdu Century New International Exhibition & Convention Center in China, concluded successfully. This year, CAPAS hosted 612 domestic and overseas exhibitors, which was a 5-per cent growth, covering a 7-per cent increase in exhibition space to 48,000sq m compared to the previous event. Visitor attendance was also up 5 per cent to 18,916 people.

Pleased to witness another successful edition, James Yu, Deputy General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co, Ltd, commented: “CAPAS once again proved to be an efficient business platform and a hub for information exchange and investment for Southwest China. A series of events encouraged players to stay up-to-date with market trends, gain a deeper understanding of the industry and its associated obstacles and opportunities as well as expand business networks. The show also offered many services for key Sichuan cities to develop investment prospects. As we look towards the future, CAPAS would continue to strengthen its services to be a driving force for development in the region’s auto industry.”

This was the third time Truck & Bus News visited the show. We could see CAPAS continuing to improve its sourcing efforts by enhancing themed zones and categories. The seven themed zones for this year were Parts & Components, Commercial Vehicles, Accessories & Customising Repair, Supply Chain & Chain Stores, E-mobility & Infrastructure, Made in Sichuan and the Tyres sector.

The Commercial Vehicles zone was of our greatest interest. The Emei driverless electric bus, which took centre stage at the Sichuan Bus Manufacturing Company’s booth, successfully attracted crowds. Other familiar brands were Yinlong, CNJ, JAC, Dayun, FAW Jiefang, just to name a few.

E-mobility & Infrastructure zone attracts leading brands

According to a study published by the German Centre of Automotive Management, global demand for electric vehicles has grown to 2.1 million in 2018. It also said that China was the biggest growth driver in electric mobility. Sales of electric vehicles in China, including commercial vehicles, increased by 62 per cent to a record 1.26 million.

As a leading platform for the automotive industry in Southwest China, the new trend was featured by CAPAS through its E-mobility & Infrastructure zone, which played an important role in the show. The manufacture of new energy vehicles and smart cars forms one of the 16 developing industries in Sichuan. As such, the E-mobility & Infrastructure zone was supported by 26 local and international new energy vehicle brands such as BYD, Geely Auto, JAC, Porsche, Roewe, Tesla, Volkswagen and many more. On top of this, the show also saw electric buses and trucks displayed by commercial vehicle manufacturers across China.

The zone also welcomed the new Hong Kong Pavilion for New Energy Vehicles. Led by the Automotive Parts and Accessory System R&D Centre of Hong Kong, the pavilion hosted 24 technology-based companies. They showcased green logistics materials and manufacturing products as well as smart technology and mobility.

Buyer group participation up 20 per cent

Upholding the show’s mission to support industry growth in the region, CAPAS strived for more detailed and personalised services. The show provided a series of visitor promotion activities and seminars in promising cities in Sichuan including Chongqi, Meishan, Suining and Zigong. As a result, the 2019 edition saw a 20-per cent growth in buyer group participation, with many coming from repair workshops with fleet and logistics service background.

In responding to the sourcing needs of exhibitors and buyers, CAPAS introduced a number of new value-added services such as the Business Matching Service for VIP Buyers and Professional workshop and 4S store visits. The visit to the workshop and 4S store gave us a better understanding of their concept and day-to-day operation. It was also an eye-opening experience for Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc Marketing Manager Shirley Liu. She said: “In addition to participating as an exhibitor and joining the business matching programme, we also attended the 4S store visits. These activities are extremely helpful for companies from outside Sichuan. This was a very practical experience for us to understand more about the Southwest market and touch base with local people. From here, we now have a better grasp of the local repair, car care and chain store markets, and their service level. This would keep us informed in our business strategy and development in the region.”

Another highlight of the show was the fringe programme, which covered the latest updates and discussed the current challenges and opportunities in the market. For example, the Southwest Automotive Aftermarket Summit 2019 focused heavily on both the potential and challenges in the Southwest China aftermarket. Elsewhere, experts discussed the future movement of the industry, business models for profitability, store operations and service optimisation in the supply chain and chain stores.

CAPAS is co-organised by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, the Automotive Sub-Council (CCPIT-Auto), Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, Sichuan Council (CCPIT-Sichuan). The next edition is set to be held from 21st–23rd May, 2020 at the same venue.
