Mohd Najeeb Rasli and his business partner Atan Oth- man set up KPX Sdn Bhd 7 years ago with noble aims: to help the local land transport industry achieve zero road accident through instilling a commitment and moti- vation to safety, not just driving skills.
“I have always been passionate about road safety. Before we set up the company, we had been actively involved in driving and promoting essential road safety consultancy and training for drivers and trainers for more than 15 years. Our strate- gic fundamental concept in delivering road safety consultancy and driver’s training is based on the preventive, safe and de- fensive approach,” said Najeeb, who is currently holding the position of consultant in the company.
For a number of years, Najeeb said, many countries had ad- opted a basic test of driving competency in which the required pass standards or competency tended to focus on safety tech- nics for managing vehicle control and making safe and con- trolled progress. Once the driver had passed the initial com- petency test, they never needed to prove their driving ability again. Yet, research had found that almost half of the experi- enced drivers would not pass basic safety test if they had to retake it today.
95 per cent of road accidents are due to driver errors
“Vehicles are subjected to an annual test to ensure that they remain mechanically fit for use on the road. Statistics show that mechanical defects cause fewer than 3 per cent of road crashes. While drivers’ errors and omissions are the main cause of more than 95 per cent of road accidents, drivers do not have to prove that they are fit for the roads. All road users are exposed to the same degree of risk but those driving for a living are almost 3 times as likely to have a crash than the ordinary drivers. 纳吉布说,许多国家在好几年前都实行了基本驾驶能力测 试。然而这些测试的标准或测试的能力往往只集中在控制 车子、取得安全和控制进度的安全技能。一旦司机通过了 最初的驾驶能力测试后,他们就无须再证明他们的驾驶能 力了。然而,研究显示,如果现在让那些有经验的司机再 考一次当初的驾驶测试,他们当中会有半数不合格。
95% 的车祸发生是因为司机失误
“车子每年都必须检查一次,以确保它们没有机械故 障,适合在路上行驶。统计资料显示,机械故障在车祸 发生率中低于3%,司机失误却占了超过95%,因为司机无 须证明他们在路上开车的能力。 所有的道路使用者都面 对同样的风险,但是那些职业司机所面对的风险比一般 驾驶人高了3倍。英国和欧洲的经验告诉我们,那些在 通过了最初驾驶测试后又经过某些司机发展培训测试的 司机,发生车祸的比率比那些没有经过任何培训的来得 低。因此,驾驶培训能大大降低司机的车祸率。”
