how the utilisation of school buses can reduce the number of cars going back and forth from home to school, thereby helping to lower traffic congestion and emissions.
Robinson also stressed that the Yellow School Bus is the access to learning. “For many, the school day begins and ends when children get on and off the Yel- low School Bus. It is clear that learning does not stop until students say goodbye to their bus driver in the afternoon. It does not take thorough analysis to see that once your child boards the bus, they are more likely to get to class than when they travel by other methods. Taking the bus decreases truancy and increases the likelihood of children doing well in school. If half the battle is showing up, the Yellow School Bus is helping us win that battle.”
Dick Fischer, the Owner and President of Trans-Consult & “Father” of the U.S shared information about school bus route planning and bus stop set-up. Ac- cording to him, one should consider four factors before planning the bus route. These include the longest walking distance of the different ages of children from home to school, the longest distance that the children can tolerate from home to school as well as the longest time they can tolerate in the school bus and the minimum and the maximum number of students that each individual stops can service. He also talked about the best way to increase operational efficiency and route planning for multiple destinations.
Also speaking were Pete Meslin, the Director of Transportation Newport-Mesa Unified School District and Peter Lawrence, the Director of Transportation for Fairport Central School District.
Meslin’s topic was “Transportation Information Management: The US Example”. He talked about how transporters operate in the US and how to increase ef- ficiencies and reduce costs through the use of key performance indicators and metrics. He also touched on the sources of data, data management and how to use the data efficiently, as well as the new trends of emerging technologies.
In his talk on “Driver Safety and Training”, Lawrence discussed the new driver qualification, bus driver training and safety. In terms of safety, Lawrence ex- plained that the younger the children are, the more dangers they face. This is because of their unpredictable behaviour and the fact that they do not think that accidents are dangerous. In addition, they lack concentration, their vision is not as wide and as far as adults and they lack the ability to judge distances, speed and noise direction.
“Apart from appropriate loading, it is safer to get the students to fill up the middle seats of the school bus, as when accidents happen, the vehicle normally hits either the front or back of your
bus, ”Lawrence stressed.
There were also local speakers at the conference including Pro- fessor Tieming Zhang, Yang Liu of Yutong Bus who talked about “Intelligent School Bus Safety Controlling Systems Based on Vehicular Networking Technol- ogy” and a representative of Higer Bus who gave an “Intro- duction to Domestic School Bus Safety Equipment and the Ap- plication of Intelligent Operation Systems.
