Repositioning of the driver’s seat 65mm forwards and 20mm to- wards the side of the cab improves vision and as a result safety.
Needless to say, fuel economy is high on everyone’s priority list and whilst aerodynamics and weight saving can do some of the job, much of the savings are down to the power unit, and Scania claims a 5 per cent reduction in fuel consumption across its full range trucks, two per cent from aerodynamics and three per cent from the engines and finely tuned gear change systems.
Improvements also extend to the chassis with a change in the front axle position and an improvement to braking systems making the truck more stable under hard braking and sharp cornering.
In line with industry developments, Scania is also building on its connectivity. All modern vehicles, and indeed vehicle equipment come with sensors to monitor their performance. As the technol- ogy becomes increasingly reliable the uses for the data that in- formation collects continues to grow. From the maintenance point of view the data being collected by trucks from their sensors and sent by the Internet back to the data controller is legion. That big data enables the fleet managers, be they in-house, or at the man- ufacturers’ agents, to determine the performance of the vehicle. They can predict maintenance requirements, and help schedule advance repairs so that the potential for roadside breakdowns
