The show opening press launch at the IAA from a manufacturer came from Daimler as they fo- cused on the future. Yes, their hall was filled with trucks and buses with ranges of diesel engines and the latest in conventional technology, but the fo- cus of the company presentation was not so much where the Daimler brands were today but where they were heading tomorrow.
We were introduced to the world premiere of the Mer- cedes Benz Urban eTruck and the all new Fuso e- Canter.
Both vehicles destined to set the urban markets in the coming year.
The Urban eTruck illustrates the fascinating possibili- ties of connectivity, electric drive systems, future dis- play and control technologies, telematics, and a large- ly self-sufficient power supply. The Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck defines the latest developments in all- electric vehicles in the heavy short-radius distribution sector. The triple-axle vehicle with a permissible gross weight of 26.0 t produces zero local emissions and runs silently, yet it is equal to a truck with an internal combustion engine in terms of load and performance, and, thanks to its innovative power supply, it is also economical.
The Urban eTruck holds its own against similar inter- nal combustion engine-powered trucks in every re- spect, even its weight. The additional weight stands at only 1700 kg. As the EU Commission is in favour of increasing the permissible gross vehicle weight of trucks with alternative drives by a maximum of 1.0 t, this will more or less cancel out the weight disadvan- tage of the electric drive.
The outstanding features of the Urban eTruck include its drive with electrically pow- ered rear axle and electric motors directly adjacent to the wheel hubs. Their maxi- mum output is 2 x 125 kW, while torque is 2 x 500 Nm. The standard version of the axle has already proven it- self in buses.
The battery capacity of the Urban eTruck has a modular design. The basic arrangement is a battery pack consisting of lithium- ion batteries with a total ca- pacity of 212 kWh. This re- sults in a range of up to 200 km – normally enough for a typical day's delivery round.
The features that make the Urban eTruck work are all based around connectiv- ity. The vehicle is acquiring data all the time and that data is connected to the ve- hicle’s computers that talk to the operator and the fleet manager. That data is used to manage the vehicle’s operation from the way it is driven to its maintenance schedule. Everything is connected and that con- nectivity is the buzz word of the transport industry this year. That connectiv- ity feeds back information to data collection systems that build vast resources of big data that can be used to predict performance and the need for maintenance.
The Fuso eCanter replaces the Fuso Canter E-Cell. The new name represents the third generation of the world's first fully electric-
