To enjoy the full benefits of nitrogen tyre inflation, Gurmit said it was important to measure the purity level of nitrogen after the tyre was inflated with a handheld nitrogen analyser. The goal, Gurmit said, was to achieve no less than 95 per cent nitrogen purity.
“We are able to achieve 5.3 to 5.5 per cent fuel savings depend- ing on truck models. According to the website, nitrogen- inflated tyres are able to provide an additional 20 to 25 per cent better mileage compared to tyres inflated with normal compressed air. This was proven true with our B-double. We noticed that the nitrogen-inflated tyres fitted on its drive axle had a longer life span, having lasted for 59,000km compared to 45,000km with normal compressed air. The savings on the low-bed LPG trail- er’s tyres were even greater; they were able to last for 90,000km compared to 60,000km previously.”
With nitrogen, Gurmit continued, it helped to save time. They only needed to check their tyre pressure every 6 months when the truck was due for inspection. Nitrogen diffused through air more slowly than compressed air, he explained. The tyre pres-
