The View of a Manufacturer:
Ian Tan: Scania believes that driver is the single most important asset of any operator. Therefore the driver must be given the right training and the right care (especially enough rest in between drives). The vehicle must be of the right specifications for the job and must be given the specified maintenance frequency and scope. Only then can the driver get the best out of a Scania. Any approach to reduce road accidents must incorporate these factors too.
There are many factors why road accidents happen. That is why the maintenance and care of driver and vehicle must play their part towards the safety of passengers. When the authorities, operators, drivers and manufacturers consistently do this, it will contribute to a higher level of safety. Seatbelts, for example, help to reduce in- jury during accidents but what we should aim for is the total pre- vention of accidents in the first place.
The relevant stakeholders can help based on the following as- pects:
1) The possibility of legislating a higher minimum requirement of safety features that all buses on the road must have in order to enhance the quality of vehicles that are out there servicing passengers.
2) The possibility of legislating a higher minimum requirement of driver training that all the drivers must get from the vehicle manufacturer.
3) The possibility of legislating a higher minimum requirement of driver comfort in between drives.
4) Incentivise women to be drivers in order to increase the pool of skilled drivers.
Scania is holding an Introduction to Scania Technology on the 28th of May for members of the media to allow them to have a rare look at the company’s technology that goes into each vehicle to make them safer as well as more fuel efficient and eco-friendly for the drivers, passengers, and everyone else on the road.
