Currently, there are more than 300 highdeck/double-deck buses on the road. As bus operators, we had no say in the design of these buses as it is ap- proved by the authorities. After more than 10 years, the authorities suddenly claim that the centre of gravity of such vehicles is poor. In the first place they should have looked into it when approving the bus plans. In any event, the centre of gravity has no relevance to the length of the journey traveled by the bus.
Tengku Hasmadi
No. The centre of gravity issue has nothing to do with the distance travelled. It will only apply when the bus is doing cornering. Thus, double deck buses are safe for long haul journeys as well as curved roads, but not on winding roads.
We are the pioneers in operating double-deck buses, and we have been op- erating them since 2002. Today, we have 67 double-deck buses on the road. We use them for long haul journeys, but not to the Cameron Highlands and for the Genting Highlands. We only go up to Awana, which is located at the half way point of Genting highlands.

No. Double-deck buses with 6x2 chassis and high decker buses with 4x2 chassis are safe to use. The manufacturers have done the calculation on the height of the double-deck buses to ensure the safety, and JPJ has approved their usage on the road.
There are many courses and contributing factors in traffic accidents. Of course regular maintenance and checks are required to ensure the buses are in good condition.

No. In Europe there are a lot of 3 axle double decks. There are many factors in determining the suitability of the coach for the routes.
Are high-deck or double-deck buses difficult to handle? Does a driver need special training before they drive high-deck or double-deck buses?
Datuk Ashfar
You need special skill to handle a high-deck/double-deck bus. Most of the bus companies will not let new drivers drive these buses. They choose those who are experienced. We have suggested that the Government come out with two different licenses for the drivers, one for those who drive normal buses and another for high-deck/double-deck buses to ensure safety of the passengers and other road users. But, so far we hear nothing from them.
Besides this, we had also suggested to the Government that they should issue two different licenses to differentiate drivers who drive manual buses and those who drive automatic transmission buses, as the former is more complex to drive. Again, it is to ensure safety of the passengers as well as other road users. The authority has agreed and will be implementing it this year, starting with motorcars.

KTB had worked together with Miros in 2007 to draft the Safety, Health and Environment Code of Practice (SHE Code) for Transport Sector. There are four elements to ensure safety on the road, including driver management, vehicle management, risk and journey management as well as data and report management.
Driver management is vital to creating a safer road environment. In order to get drivers to change their perceptions of risk and appropriate behaviour on the road, we constantly provide in-house training for our drivers. We will get the bus manufacturers that sell us the double deck buses to provide training

   Jyh Siong
