A Busload of Woes for the Malaysian Bus Industry
The recent nation-wide shut down of bus ser- vices in Malaysia has successfully caught the attention of the public as well as the government, forcing everyone to face the reality that our bus industry is in crisis and is desperate for solutions. In fact, the problems have been fes- tering in the industry over the years, and the Pan- Malaysian Bus Operators Association (PMBOA) has been doing its best to raise awareness, but the authority has little interest in understanding the fundamental problems.
To aid bus companies that are in dire need of help to keep their stage bus services running, SPAD has announced that it will release the first RM 100 million from the RM 400 million allocation for bus operators. Will this be a solution to the prob- lems or SPAD is trying to buy time? Is there any other better option?
Like the Chinese saying “After snow comes frost ”, the bus industry is facing one disaster after an- other. Miros released a report recently on the sta- bility of high-deck and double-deck buses, saying that these vehicles are not suitable for long haul journeys and have a higher probability of rolling over during crashes. This has a great impact on bus operators especially those that have invested heavily on these buses.
In order to provide our reader with a better un- derstanding towards the current issues that are affecting the Malaysian bus industry, as well as providing a platform to express and make sugges- tions, Truck & Bus News put the questions below to PMBOA President Datuk Dr. Mohamad Ashfar Ali, Konsortium Transnasional Bhd (KTB) Execu- tive Director Tengku Hasmadi Tengku Hashim, Five Stars Tours Managing Director B.C. Tan, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd (TCIE) Gen- eral Manager- Bus Division Danny Ng, and Phang Jyh Siong of Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd.
